We walked up to its garden again last June to show friends those truly magnificent views but didn't look at the rooms. The R. was built by English in working on the Algeciras-Ronda railroad and has had many illustrious guests over the years besides Rilke and is still used by the famous matadors, such as Francisco Rivera Ordonez, who fight at the beautiful little Plaza de Toros down the street.

Hemingway once wrote of it, "it's where you should go if you ever go to Spain on a honeymoon or if you ever bolt with anyone"! It had, over the years, become a little faded,a bit thread-bare "decadent charm, still conserving all the flavor of the turn of the century, as if time had past it by" -says a Spanish guide of mine called "Nidos de amor"-Love Nests and certainly much overshadowed by the Parador.

But I've read that the Husa chain renovated it in '96 so as to keep up with the growing fine competition the Parador, San Miguel and the "W" type, hip new Maestranza. For dining, besides the Don Miguel, for traditional Ronda cuisine, you also have the very popular Pepe Romero, chock full of bullfight memorabiliia, with attentive service and delicious desserts, right across from the Plaza de Toros, and for very creative cuisine by a rising star chef, Sergio Lopez, in a modern setting, there's Tragabuches, which has recently been given a Michelin star.
